Time is precious in the run up to the big day, and we often hear from grooms and groomsmen who aren't sure when to schedule in their all-important, pre-wedding grooming appointments. With this in mind, we put together a wedding grooming Q&A that will answer some of those burning questions! If you're wondering when to trim your beard for your (or your best mate's) wedding, or are trying to figure out the optimum time for a pre-wedding haircut, you've come to the right place!
Can I wear a beard on my wedding day?
Of course! If you've found a look that works for you, you should stick with it for your wedding day. We don't recommend making any drastic changes to your facial hair in the weeks before the wedding. The last thing you want is to regret your choice, or feel exposed or uncomfortable on the day.
Do I need to get a professional barber to do my pre-wedding trim?
We highly recommend going to a trustworthy barber or grooming room for your beard or facial hair trim before the wedding - this is one time in your life you can justify calling in the professionals! You'll find a list of our favourites here!
When should I trim my beard or facial hair before the wedding?
If you've got a full beard, you should go for your beard trim about a week before your wedding, but depending on your hair growth, it might be worth popping back in for a touch-up on the morning of the wedding, or the day before. Your barber will be able to guide you on this, and recommend a beard oil to use on the big day. If you like to wear your facial hair shorter, aim for two or three days before the wedding.
When should I get a hot towel shave before the wedding?
If you're having a hot towel shave for your wedding, we recommend getting it on the morning of the wedding. Just make sure it's a few hours before the ceremony or first look, to give your skin a chance to relax and return to normal.
When should I get a haircut before the wedding?
For most hairstyles, we recommend getting your hair cut a week before your wedding. This will give you time to get used to styling your new cut and have further adjustments made if you decide you're not happy with the result. If you have very short hair, you should get your hair cut two or three days before the wedding to ensure everything is looking neat and tidy. It's also a good idea to plan for a sideburn touch up and neck trim on the morning of the wedding, or the day before.
Do I need to splash out on a fancy haircut for the wedding?
That depends on your definition of fancy! In general, we recommend going to a high-end hair salon or barber shop before your wedding, as they'll be used to cutting hair in a way that looks good, both on camera and in person, and can give you tips on how to style it on the day. That said, if you've got a good regular barber that you're really happy with, it's fine to stick with them, regardless of how swanky their set up is.
What can I do to make sure my skin looks good on the wedding day?
This really depends on your skincare experience level. If you're already using a good cleanser and moisturiser, it's worth adding a few more products - a serum, an eye cream, a microbead-free scrub and/or an occasional mask - to your regime, if you've got the time, that is - we don't recommend making changes your regime any later than two months before the wedding. If you're new to the world of skincare, or you've been neglecting your skin lately, we recommend finding a good facialist, booking in for a facial and asking them for advice. They'll be able to address any issues, recommend products specifically for your skin and show you how to apply them correctly.
What treatments do I need to get before my wedding?
Your wedding provides a great excuse to treat yourself to a few grooming appointments that you might not often get around to - a manicure, a pedicure, a facial, a hot towel shave, and a relaxing massage while you're at it! Of course, you don't need to do any of this - a haircut and a beard trim or shave are the only dealbreakers in our book. Just make sure to set aside enough time in the run up to the wedding to clip your nails, take a trimmer to those nose hairs and generally make sure you're looking neat and tidy!
What else can I do to make sure I'm looking my best on the day?
Prepare yourself for some pretty boring, but effective, advice! Drink lots of water, eat relatively healthily and get plenty of exercise in the run up to the wedding - actually, start now! - and make sure to get a good night's sleep the night before... there's plenty of time for partying tomorrow! Try something from our list of the best sleep scents here!
