If you're dreaming of getting married in America and want a really unique wedding venue, you can call off the search. US sweethearts Emily and Connor had an uber-cool distillery wedding at Copper & Kings Brandy Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. With a chill indoor-outdoor layout, their wedding venue had an industrial-feel amphitheatre and a reception area in a converted barn, how cool! The couple inadvertently had a "no-white" flower theme on their spring wedding day which also sweetly aligned with Emily's grandparents. If you love vibrant blooms we're telling you now, you'll fall head over heels. Joy, colour and laughter were on the cards and there was even cool tours to ensure their guests had a cracking time. Every last drop of their wonderful distillery wedding was lensed by Sarah Katherine Davis.
So let's get to know our real wedding couple more. Connor is from St. Louis, Missouri, and Emily is from Ashland, Ohio. They met through mutual friends at Bellarmine University in Louisville and they had their first meaningful chat on the roof of a house while attending a music department party. After a few months, they had their first date watching a science fiction comedy in a dorm room.
"It was almost matched in ambiance by a second date of studying for finals surrounded by Emily's roommates. Our first year of dating was filled with stressful and life-changing events, including Connor's dad successfully getting a double lung transplant, so casual dating turned into a supportive and loving relationship and partnership," Emily reflects.
Emily was caught completely off guard when Connor popped the question as the plan had been that she would design herself an engagement ring using jewellery belonging to his family. Emily admits: "I was moving at a snail's pace with this due to Covid safety along with juggling work/life balance which is not easy sometimes with ADHD. Connor decided on a whim to buy a ring and surprise me at the Bernheim Nature Reserve. It was just us two and our dog Mooney, which was perfect. I'm so glad he did! The ring is art deco from the 1920s."
When it came to their wedding in April 2022, the couple wanted to create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere for their guests while treating them to great food and drink with fantastic music. "Three words we were willing into existence for the wedding was chill, colourful and laughter. We were looking forward to hanging with friends and family, eating, and dancing. Overall, having a day that reflected us as people and partners."
They had always loved the space at Copper & Kings located in the historic Butchertown neighborhood. "There is both an indoor and outdoor set-up, which gave us flexibility in case we ran into bad weather (thankfully we had near-perfect weather). Copper & Kings already uses native plants to balance out their more industrial-looking space, so adding some additional colour and greenery with flowers and plants from a local florist felt appropriate." There are loads of cool brewery and distillery venues in Ireland if you want a similar vibe without jetting off.
Emily was a bona fide freespirited beauty in her fabulous lace wedding dress with a plunge neckline which she accessorised with gold heels and art deco-style drop earrings. Connor opted for a slick black suit which he wore with a white shirt, a black tie with a white polka dots and black shoes. Her bridesmaids wore mix and match dresses which is one of the hottest bridesmaids dresses trends for 2024.
They wanted the vibe to be modern and they gravitated towards jewel tones with a dash of earthy shades. "Our florist jokingly referred to our flower taste as 'no-white wedding' which is funny since our bridesmaids all have different colours of dresses, my aunts (my mom has five sisters) have been calling our wedding the 'rainbow wedding'. My grandparents had the same anniversary and my grandma also didn't do matching bridesmaid dresses, which was called a 'rainbow wedding' back in the day I guess?"
125 of their loved ones paid witness as they tied the knot in the amphitheatre, their big day just keeps getting cooler right?! They walked down the aisle to their favourite songs, including an ambient steel guitar piece Riga Black by Chuck Johnson because they played it a lot when they tried to soothe their dog Mooney down during storms. They also selected the track Sleep Walk by Deftones which is Emily's favorite band. "They both have a different energy that match our respective music tastes, but share a sort of meditative and nostalgic quality to them."
The courtyard at the versatile party venue is perfectly primed for a good time with a fully-stocked bar and a firepit. "The staff at the venue offered tours of the distillery which we thought was a fun activity for guests. It's also close to downtown, hotels, bars, and restaurants which made it easy for guests to get to the venue and explore the city."
"To us, our wedding was about having the best time possible with our family and friends. We didn't want it to be too serious or formal, but also wanted to have moments to reflect on the (almost) decade we had been together and celebrate the years to come," they reflect.
The reception styling was kept minimal with white tablecloths and black napkins while glass vases held small clusters of flowers. The pared-back styling let the industrial coolness of the space shine bright.
They have the following wedding planning advice: "Not sweating the little things too much, especially if you're working with a specific budget, will save you stress and money. It's also easy to feel pressured to go all out on everything; we almost got eloped on multiple occasions and that's a totally cool and valid way to do it as well - at the end of the day, it's about celebrating love."
They opted for a chic cream cake with a ribbed swirl effect which was adorned with punchy hued blooms. Cake toppers are such a fabulous way to personalise your wedding cake and sweetly they got a miniature statue of their beloved pooch as theirs. "We wanted him to be a part of our wedding in some way and although we couldn't bring him to the venue, the cake topper was a hit!" For their first dance, they chose My Bloody Valentine's If I Am.
They ended up planning a mini-honeymoon on Anna Maria Island in Florida last-minute and they had an absolute ball. "It was super relaxed and fun. We are planning to do a Europe trip at some point, but I'd definitely recommend doing a low-key trip that requires minimal planning. After spending months planning our wedding, we wanted to just end up somewhere and hang out with no real plans, which is exactly what we did and it was great."
