Coming Up Roses: Charlie & Jane's Walled Garden Wedding

A charming, flower-filled celebration!

Today's real wedding shows just how impactful building a theme around a single flower can be. Pale pink roses not only filled Charlie and Jane's 2019 wedding, but inspired everything from bridesmaids dresses to groomswear looks to DIY decor to the all-important wedding cake! This pair said their 'I dos' at St Barnabas Cathedral in Nottingham before heading to The Walled Garden at Beeston Fields in Nottingham for their reception. Their Nottingham walled garden wedding was captured beautifully by Nathan Walker Photography who was kind enough to share the imagery with us. Let's take a closer look, shall we!?

Londoner Charlie and Sheffield native Jane tell us they met on their first day at university in Reading, as they were living in the same corridor in their halls. Their chemistry was instant and the two have spent little time apart since!

Nine years later, as Jane was planning on surprising Charlie for his 30th birthday, Charlie was planning his own surprise! Jane treated him to a trip to Lisbon to celebrate the milestone birthday, but soon they were toasting to their engagement!

Spending much of her childhood in Nottingham at her grandparents' home, Jane was keen to return there for the couple's wedding. "The location was very special," Charlie said. "It was important to us and to our families that we had a Catholic ceremony and where better than the cathedral in Nottingham to say our vows?!"

The cathedral had "the wow factor" for this pair and even reminded Jane of her favourite movie! "One of my favourite films is The Sound of Music," she tells us, "and I could picture myself walking down the aisle like Maria, complete with a cathedral-length veil!"

Jane's Maria-inspired veil was from Wed2Be, and her dress was a Sassi Holford So Sassi design. But it was the high street that came up trumps for Jane's wedding shoes, as she picked the perfect pair up in Monsoon.

The aisle and altar in St Barnabas Cathedral were embellished with gorgeous pink roses, marking the start of a wonderfully simple yet impactful theme for the day. The flowers were arranged by the cathedral’s dedicated florist. Kevin from Slades Florist in Nottingham did the bouquets, buttonholes and provided beautiful pink avalanche stem roses for the tables. Amazingly, Kevin is the same florist Jane’s Mum and Dad had for their wedding 30 years previously!

When the couple viewed the space at Beeston Fields, they knew instantly it was the perfect place for their reception. "We wanted to combine a beautiful, grand ceremony in the cathedral with a relaxed reception in the garden, with great music, great food and plenty of drinks," Charlie says. "It was important to us that the reception be relaxed, full of love, friendship and laughter. The Walled Garden was the first reception venue we visited, we fell in love with the beautiful garden and reserved a date straight away!" Throughout the venue, guests could see DIY touches from the bride and groom, who handmade all the decorations with help from their family. "It was so special to see it all come together after months of hard work," they tell us. "Some decorations were passed on to us from a friend's wedding that took place earlier that year - so that was nice for them to see their leftover confetti being thrown, or their table name holders being used, for example."

Among the decorative elements made by the couple and their family were the floral hoops hanging at the reception, the flower arrangements on the tables, the welcome signs, toiletry baskets, table names, seating plan and over 100 jam jars for flowers and tealights, individually wrapped in lace and twine!

"Our bridesmaids, groomsmen and best man all had jobs that made the day run smoothly, they made sure everything ran perfectly so we didn't have to worry about anything," the couple tell us. "Every single person at our wedding means so much to us, so we were just so happy to have our favourite people celebrating with us!"

As the evening drew in, the couple and their guests enjoyed an amazing sunset, a a suitable end for a day filled with laughter and smiles.

The newlyweds enjoyed a minimoon to Santorini after the wedding but treated themselves to an extended honeymoon travelling around Mexico later in the year.

As for Charlie and Jane's advice for other couples? "Do a bit at a time, make sure you have a list, even if it seems never-ending, take a few days off before the wedding to do any final decorations or preparations, and then just focus on enjoying your wedding!"

Thank you so much to Charlie and Jane for sharing their Nottingham walled garden wedding with us and to Nathan Walker Photography for capturing it all so beautifully. You can see more from their rose-adorned wedding in the gallery below.
